Handloom Weaving: An Inspirational methodology

A loom that is used to weave cloth without the use of electricity is called as Handloom. Basically, the weaving is interlacing two sets of yarn, i.e. the warp (length) and the weft (width). The equipment that helps this interlacing is the loom. The yarn in spinning mill is spun mechanically and it is called mill spun yarn and fabric woven on the hand loom with mill spun yarn is termed as ‘handloom fabric’.

For handloom production, yarn is dyed in the hank form. Yarn dyeing for handlooms is a crucial pre loom activity. Yarn can be dyed using Chemicals, Indigo Dyes or natural Dyes. Post dyeing, warping is done which converts the hank yarn into a linear form to give the length on the loom. After warping is completed, the warp is stretched out and sizing material is applied to add strength to the yarn and lubricate it to withstand the rigors of weaving. This activity is called Street Sizing.

Next process is weaving, where handloom weavers use Pit loom, stand loom and frame loom to perform this craft. The Pit loom is a loom situated on the ground with a pit having two peddles set in the pit for the weaver to operate. Pit loom weaving is considered to be better weaving technique. The ground absorbs the tension and speed and makes the fabric more breathable.
