Eid: The Festival celebrating the Devotion towards the Almighty

Eid is the biggest festival of Muslims and celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm throughout the world. The celebrations of Eid commences from ‘Chaand Raat’ that is “Night of the Moon”. The festive actually begins from the first day of Ramadan. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a stern fast and involve in religious activities such as helping people in Mosque, Charity to the poor, Food and clothes to the needy etc. Ramadan is a month of Internal Spiritual rebirth for those who observe it with full-heartedness. What follows Ramadan is a three day, celebration popularly known as Eid al-Fitr (the Festival of Fast-Breaking).

Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month which follows Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. The day of Eid starts early morning where people visit Mosque to pray to the Almighty, Meet and greet the family and friends, Exchange rituals and blessings, make phone calls to the long distant well-wishers. In some parts of the world, this continues for 3 days and in those countries, these three days are the national holiday. Men wear Pathani suits or Kurta Pajamas with sheer elegance and women wear new clothes like Sararas or Salwar Kameez along with Abayas for Eid-al-Fitr.

History of Eid-al-Fitr

The originator of Eid-al-Fitr was Islamic Prophet Muhammad. Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca and arrived in the city of Medina. In Medina, he found some people celebrating two special days in the year in which people were more inclined towards amusement and Entertainment. Prophet Muhammad inquired about the nature of celebration and got to know that these two days are occasions of recreation and fun.

The Prophet Muhammad enlightened the crowd that the Almighty God has already set two days of festivals and celebrations instead of these festivities, one is Eid-ul-Fitr and the other one is Eid-ul-Adha.

Since then, for all Muslims, these days are occasions for showing gratitude to the Almighty Allah. Muslims fast on a daily basis in the holy month of Ramadan every year from sunrise to sunset. Fasting involves abstaining from beverages, food, and sexual relations.
It is believed that this practice has helped the community to develop Self-Discipline and self-control. The month-long fasting exercise is believed to clean one’s soul and develop the strength to live a life of obedience to Almighty God.

How is Eid Celebrated in India?

The day which follows Chand Raat is the Eid-al-Fitr. Muslims start the celebrations from the night by visiting Malls and other places for Eid shopping and enjoying with family and friends. Girls apply traditional Henna on their Hands and Feet. People greet each other with “Eid Mubarak” and often than not gifts are exchanged along with the sum of money, called as Eidi. Eidi is generally given by Elders to the younger ones. What follows is New traditional clothes, favorite food, blessings and eventful evening. 16Family members and relatives come together to share sweets, snacks, Sevayyian (sweet Vermicelli) and greet each other with “Eid Mubarak”. Charity is an Integral part of Eid celebrations and called as fitra which is generally done before morning and evening prayers.
